Europa Stamps – 70 years of the `Europa` issue in circulation as of today
Pošta Srbije has released a series of commemorative postage stamps in honour of the anniversary marked by the Association of Public Postal Operators of Europe, PostEurop – seven decades since the first issue of postage stamps of the “Europa” series. The great anniversary is marked by the release of a stamp with a common motif that celebrates the power of cooperation, unity and innovation in the European space.
In the competition for the selection of an artistic solution for a joint stamp with the theme "70 years of the EUROPA issue. United in...", the solution of the Finnish Postal Administration, authored by Klaus Welp, was selected. The winning design, which artistically summarizes seven decades of cooperation between European postal operators with abstract and symbolic motifs, is also an invitation to a new generation of artists to visually shape the future of the community through their own original expression.
As part of the anniversary issue, Pošta Srbije presented a postage stamp authored by Jakša J. Vlahović, with a symbolic depiction of the harmonious cooperation among European peoples for the purpose of peace, stability and progress. The author's starting point was the basic idea that the stamp, as an artistic miniature, should confirm the role of an "ambassador of culture" and a bridge connecting countries and people.
"The idea behind creating this motif is that, in addition to marking the anniversary of the Europa issue, we are also commemorating the decades-long struggle for peace, prosperity and cooperation of humanity. The motif on the stamp depicts the outlines of a man and a woman, whose bodies form the silhouette of a dove – a messenger, a bearer of the words of peace and the very symbol of peace", says Vlahović.
The philatelic initiative "Europa", since its launch in 1956 until today, has grown into one of the most recognizable symbols of European unity and the promotion of the richness of diversity. Pošta Srbije releases an annual "Europa" issue as part of its programme, within which it publishes two commemorative postage stamps, in the form of a sheet of eight with a vignette and a commemorative first day cover.
Commemorative postage stamps of the issue "Europa - 70 Years of the Europa Issue" are available for purchase as of today at post office counters, in the Filatelija store at Takovska 7 in Belgrade, and in the eFilatelija online store.
