Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić presented the Sretenje Order of the First Degree for the Public Enterprise "Post of Serbia" to Acting Director Zoran Anđelković for special merits and achieved results in public postal transport, on the occasion of its 185th anniversary.

"I thank the Republic of Serbia and President Vučić for the honour and great sign of recognition. The occasion is an anniversary - the 185th anniversary of public postal transport in Serbia, which the Post of Serbia is celebrating on June 7, and the arguments are generally recognized - the immeasurable importance of the Post as an institution throughout history to the present day. The very beginnings of the Post are linked to the birth of the modern Serbian state. It has always been its important symbol, the foundation of communications, the bearer of change, economic, technical and technological development. We will continue with modern projects, digitalization of processes and services, the application of artificial intelligence and robotic support. The Order of Sretenje is a great incentive for our further work", said Zoran Anđelković.

Referring to the plans, Anđelković emphasized that the Post of Serbia is investing in innovation, modern equipment and infrastructure, modern technologies and electronic communications in the implementation of traditional and the creation of new postal services.

"The Post of Serbia will establish automatic sorting of postal items with robotic support in five logistics centers across the country. In the past year, we delivered 30 percent more postal items generated by e-commerce, while we are responding to new growth by implementing new technologies, new electronic services, robots, automation and parcel machines with new functionalities", concluded Anđelković.

On the occasion of Statehood Day, the Post of Serbia has published an issue of commemorative postage stamps "The State-Making Path of Serbia", which commemorates two anniversaries in 2025 - 210 years since the Takovo Uprising and 190 years since the Sretenje Constitution.

We wish our customers, employees of the Post of Serbia and all citizens happy holiday of Sretenje - Serbian Statehood Day.

A brief overview of the beginnings and development of the Post of Serbia

After the First Serbian Uprising, Serbian people established a mail delivery network by taking over the system of Turkish menzulans. In 1830, Serbia was granted autonomy by the hatt-i sharif and was allowed to open a post office for its own needs. On May 25, or June 7, according to the new calendar, in 1840, the first post office was opened in Belgrade, then in Kragujevac, followed by other free Serbian cities at the time. Ustroenie poshtanskog zavedenia (Establishment of the Postal Service), the first postal legal act, was promulgated in 1843, establishing the basic principles of the Post as a public service.

Some of the key moments in the history of the Post were the introduction of public telegraph traffic in 1855, passing the Law on Posts, the introduction and use of postage stamps for postage payment, the use of postal cars for the transport of mail and passengers in 1866, the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in Bern when the Principality of Serbia was one of the 22 founding states in 1874, the first telephone conversation in 1883, the start of public telephone traffic in 1899, the opening of a wireless station and the broadcasting of the first radio program in 1924.
