Exhibition marking 100 years of Radio Belgrade until Oct 9 at PTT Museum

The exhibition "On the radio waves: Radio Belgrade - 100 years of radio broadcasting in Serbia" by author Ljiljana Đorđević, was officially opened in the PTT Museum and will last until October 9. The participants at the opening of the exhibition were the Director of Radio Belgrade Milan Nedić, the author of the exhibition Ljiljana Đorđević, engineer and collector Miodrag Gligorić and the Head of the PTT Museum Marko Jelić.

Marko Jelić pointed out that the officers and engineers of the Post were an important part of the very beginnings of Radio Belgrade. "The Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs was the line ministry in charge of radio broadcasting, and two engineers of the Post, Dobrivoje Petrović and Mihailo Simić, were also the first radio announcers in 1924, during the broadcast of the first radio program in Serbia. It was Simić who uttered the following sentence for the first time: This is Radio Belgrade calling. Later, they edited the program until the opening and start of work of Radio Belgrade in 1929," said Jelić.

The Director of Radio Belgrade, Milan Nedić, in his address to the guests, pointed out: "Radio Belgrade, founded in 1924, is celebrating its centenary, which is an important jubilee for the Post of Serbia as well. At that time there were only 26 radio receivers, and the owners had to sign contracts that prohibited them from sharing information from the program“.

He thanked the Post of Serbia for its cooperation, which issued a commemorative postage stamp earlier this year in honour of the jubilee. He explained that the exhibition at the PTT Museum is part of an exhibition trilogy, which includes an interactive exhibition at the Radio Belgrade Club and an exhibition at the Museum of Science and Technology.

"Radio Belgrade today produces 192 hours of programs a day and recently promoted a new channel. It remains a temple of culture and quality music, and I am convinced that it will adapt to new technological innovations and continue to be important in the future", concluded Milan Nedić.

The exhibition presents original documents and photographs from the PTT Museum's collection, while the radio sets from his private collection were donated by the collector Miodrag Gligorić.

Gligorić said that the celebration of a century of radio broadcasting in Serbia began last October and that exhibitions have already been held throughout Serbia. He explained that part of the exhibits from the collection are now available in the PTT Museum – radio sets from the 20s to 40s of the last century and documentation related to radio, while the other part is exhibited in the RTS club, together with spare parts, instruments and bibliography.

"All radio sets are from our region, none were bought abroad, they were all listened to here, in our country," said Gligorić.

The author of the exhibition, Ljiljana Đorđević, expressed her pleasure in participating in the celebration of the jubilee of radio broadcasting in Serbia, which is being jointly celebrated by Radio Belgrade, the Post of Serbia, the PTT Museum and the Museum of Science and Technology. "All the listed institutions are part of our everyday life, they have lasted for a very long time and share a common history. It is precisely with such exhibitions that we preserve and revive the heritage and jointly nurture the cultural memory", emphasized Đorđević.

Đorđević said that until October 9, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m., guided tours will be organized and invited visitors to visit the exhibition and explore the rich history of radio broadcasting in Serbia.
